What Book's Up, Buttercup?

Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead

I know I am a little late to the party with this one. I had started reading the Vampire Academy books back in 2014 when the movie came out. I was so excited about the film because it was created by the people who brought us Heathers and Mean Girls. How could this not be great? Right? Right?!! So I picked up the first book, and I remember I went to the movie theater on Valentine’s Day 2014 to watch the movie on my own. The time it was supposed to start was like 7:00 pm or so, and I got off work at 4:45 pm. There was a little drive to the theater since I was seeing it in the town I lived in, not where I worked. The theater was less than 5 minutes from my apartment. I went and grabbed a light dinner, and heading on over to the theater. I knew with it being Valentine’s Day it was going to be CRAZY, and a new Nicholas Sparks movie was coming out that same day. No wait… I just looked, it was not a Nicholas Sparks movie, Gasp!  But it was a romance movie that I am sure is just as ridiculous, Endless Love. I got me a nice park and waited while I continued to read my Vampire Academy book since I was not finished, and I always have to read the book first. I was probably at the theater around 5:15-5:30 pm, so I decided to go ahead and get my ticket early so I would not have to get in the crowd. I would just be the jerk who squeezed through a tight group of people since it was an old school theater with a tiny indoor area to get your tickets, and it had these two rails that you stood between while waiting. Yeah, I was that nightmare who was pushing through saying, “Sorry, I already have my ticket. I just need to squeeze through.” So I went to get my ticket and asked for one, and she gave me this grim, flat mouth sad face. But that was not the worst part, to my surprise, the show time that I saw before I left work was no longer an option. I asked the girl at the counter, and sure enough, she told me that same thing. Then she said the craziest thing ever. She said, “Do you want a ticket for the 4:30 pm showing?” I just looked at her. Considering it was now 5:45 pm, No. I did not want a ticket for the 4:30 pm showing. So I asked her when the next time was available and she told me, and after we figured out what time it would get out, it was just too late for me. I had to be up early in the morning to work at a tax office. So I looked and did the next best thing, I asked about The Lego Movie. It was starting around 7:30 or 8:00 pm, and got out not too late, and would work. So she asked how many tickets. I told her one. Again. She gave me the saddest look like I had not already been through this once. I was like, Uh… I am choosing to come alone! People will offer to come with me on Valentine’s Day, but I like to go by myself! I got my ticket for The Lego Movie, and went to wait for an even longer time in my car. I just looked as it as more time to read. I got on the phone and called my cousin, and then one of my two best friends… my mom (my sister is the other). We were talking, and then I saw couples coming out of the theater who also got their tickets early, and the girls were carrying roses. At this theater, if you got a ticket that was at 7:00 pm or later, you got a rose. So I told my mom how upset I was that I did not get one. She said, “Go in and get one.” So I sat there, and finally I decided… I paid for my ticket like anyone else, I wanted my rose too! I went and marched in, and asked if I could please have a rose too. They were so sweet! The girl at the counter went to get me one, and I saw this guy shake his head. Then, in his little outfit with a bowtie, he waded through the crowd, brought me the rose himself, and told me Happy Valentine’s Day. I thought that was going above and beyond. He did not have to come out there himself! One day, I will tell you another time they went above and beyond for me. So, I saw my Lego Movie, and went to Vampire Academy the next night. I was able to finish my book, and I was HOOKED! I read the first four in just a few weeks. I got to the fifth book, and waited. I was afraid it was the last book and I just could not handle that. I wanted it to last. I wanted to savor every word. I did not want it to end. So, I put it on the backburner, and I did not finish it until this morning. That is how we ended up with the review for Spirit Bound. I am so sorry for the back story, but I hope you found it entertaining as it was for me to live.

Spirit Bound is the fifth book in the Vampire Academy series, and it came out in 2010. This book sees us with Rose back from her travels in Russia and receiving letters from Damitri promising to make her his forever. He lets her know that he will do whatever it takes to keep her for eternity. He will get to her somehow, someway, someday.

Rose makes up her time while she was away, and prepares to take her exams which will allow her to graduate, and be considered for positions as a guardian. She hopes that she will be allowed to guard Lissa, her best friend and one she shares a bond with as a shadow kissed individual. The tests are set up like a show or sporting event. People are allowed to come and watch and observe as the future guardians show off their skills and talents they have learned. These include fighting, strength and endurance, and possible scenarios they may face in the real world. Rose has special tasks designed specifically for her, and amazes everyone.

Rose learns that Victor Dashkov, who is in a high security prison knows of a possible way to turn Strigoi back to their original state. There is one small problem. He will not reveal the way this is possible behind bars. This sets forth a mission comprised of possible prison escapes, Stigoi attacks, trouble with the courts upon their return, and ultimately being vulnerable to Dimitri and his possible attack. What will Rose do? Will she risk everything to try and return Dimitri to his old self and gain back his soul? Will the stakes (no pun intended) be too high? Can what Victor speaks of even be possible? All of these are answered in Spirit Bound.

I loved this book in the series. I am not sure if it was my favorite of the entire set, but it was a nice addition. I loved seeing Rose at her best while she was testing, and showing how bad-a she really is, even at her young age. I liked seeing Lissa grow, learn how to use her power of spirit even more, and the role she plays in this book. I am also torn. If what Dimitri can be changed? Who will Rose choose to be with, Adrian or Dimitri? Adrian has been there for her since Dimitri has been gone, and like a boyfriend to Rose, but Dimitri is the love of Rose’s life. Choices, choices. I give this book 5 stars because I love the series, but I would probably give it 4 based on the entire series. I also listened to the audio, and I was not crazy for the narrator. She sounded like a chipmunk who was talking too fast and high pitched. She did nice accents, but I did not care for her normal speaking voice. Overall, I gave the story and overall 4 stars, I gave the performance 3 stars on audible. In Goodreads, I will give this book 4 or 5 stars. 5 out of loyalty, but 4 based on the book alone. Another good book for a great series.
