What Book's Up, Buttercup?

ERC ~ Science Fiction Set in Space ~ The Martian by Andy Weir ~ @bookdout

For my ERC Challenge I decided to read the book The Martian by Andy Weir. I cannot say enough good things about this book. For someone who loves techy things, it was right up my alley. If I was the author and someone called me a “nerd” for writing this book, I would take it as a huge compliment because it was well-researched and executed to perfection. Did I always understand the science-y bits? No, but that was okay, there was plenty of other quality content to back up the story. I felt that Mark’s humor throughout this book shows how many people handle a struggle. I know I am the exact same way. In the face of hard times, I am the first person to crack a joke. I am a riot at funerals. Mark’s one-liners and jokes combined with cleaver sarcasm made this book a joy to read. It could have easily been boring, but it was not. And I am so glad to hear someone who dislikes disco as much as me! This was a mission where if something could go wrong, it did. This, too, would be my life. I am just lucky my head is screwed on. Mark’s will to survive against all odds was inspiring. Even up until the very end you are biting your nails hoping for the best. I loved this book, I loved Mark Watney, and I loved how one man inspired a world. Not just a nation, but captured the attention and love all across the globe. Wonderful book, and now I just hope the movie does the book justice.
